Friday, April 24th, 2009 Friday April 24th the River City Community Centre spectators got more than what they bargained for when Tim Taylor & his volunteers put on their boxing show. The bouts were kept at a minimum while there was a great display of Muay Thai. The next treat was a Muay Thai pad work out. In Muay Thai which is also known as Thai boxing, the boxers kick with their upper part of their foot just above the arch. They were definitely kicking on target & with good force. This display was well received. Thanks to Khan Phady & his team from Cambridge. Great display & treat for the club to have this on their show. Taking the ring for the first time was Connie De Melo from Ring London against Cher Blasdell from Black Eye in Brantford. This was Cher's second bout & she showed some skill development from his first bout. Good showing ladies. Abdi Abdihalim from King Street met Michael Nugent from King Street in a well controlled exhibition. These two fellas from the same club put in some ring time & displayed some very good skills. Abdi certainly can hold his own in his division & Michael puts forth a great effort developing nicely as he goes along. Jay McCarthy from King Street met Chris Savard from Black Eye throughout their battle. It was a battle. Both vying for the win. Chris' first time in the ring presented a good showing. Pat Heenan from Boomerz met Todd Charlton from River City in an exhibition. The exhibition was well controlled & each boxer did very well. Sometimes, the weight difference dictates to the Chief Official that he will not allow a fight but to allow the athletes to enter the ring & box without the award of a win, gives both some ring time in a well controlled bout. The main event had Mandy Taylor from River City against King Street's Alicia Champagne. They have battled before & the win went from one to another. This bout opened with a fury of punches & then settled down to some serious work. |
