OBA

Saturday, September 11, 2010 - Host: Syd Vanderpool & the team of Destiny Boxing at 1253 King. St. East, Kitchener, Ont.

Wow! Packed house of loud noise makers just shouting to cheer on their favorite boxers. The spectators were great. They knew to stay back of the ring. I hollered during an ending of a bout & I should not have. I was upset which is no excuse but the problem was for the Director of Officials to sort out & I should not have interfered. I apologize for my outburst. The timekeep, Sophia Melki from Hamilton did a good job. The doctor was Dr. Joe Falletta from Hamilton, great to have him with the OBA; The OBA President, Greg Post was on hand; Director of Officials Bill Hardy; other officials: Keith Kleinstuber; Raymond Olubowale; Shawn Hardy; Marilyn Taylor & Jon Broom with Sherry Boone as the administrator. The glovers kept the boxers moving along at a perfect pace. Ian Vanderpool is always co-ordinating & does a great job of it. Well organized. Congrats!! It was great to see Sarnia's Tim Taylor on hand. Tim has been 'off his feet' for a few months now. Hopefully & with a few prayers he will be back to his normal self soon.

Ok..on with the show.

1. Destiny's Bill Taylor, at 120 lbs lost the first round to Warriors, Michael Nugent of London. Michael showed some great improvement until Taylor decided he wanted the Gold. Bill took the fight to Michael in the 3rd round ending the bout.

2. Sarnia's Mandy Taylor at 140lbs met Cher Blasdell from Black Eye in Brantford. Cher is usually dominating the ring but this time, Mandy showed a serious desire to win that bout. The blows from Cher were good scoring blows with hand turned over & no slapping. Mandy was a busy gal out there.

3. The rematch - Isaac Mitchell from Boone's in Niagara Falls at 160 rematched Lee Thibeault from Boomerz in London. There was no love lost between these combatants. Lee showed great determination but Isaac just kept up the pressure hitting from any angle. Good bout.

4. Pattie Griffin from Hamilton at 132 boxed Alicia Champagne from Warriors in London & had the crowd roaring. Pattie is just a machine-gun puncher who will not take a break but she is showing off her black eye that Alicia dealt her.

5. In an exhibition bout that ended in the first round, is not a bragging point. The elder man stormed the youth in the exhibition bout causing a stoppage & the Director of Discipline to deal with that matter.

6. Jen Fisher from Destiny at 135 boxed Kylie Fallis from Hamilton. Kylie is a constant opponent who will hit from the body & back to the head. Jen Fisher is a head hunter. This bout was very good until Jen got caught with a powerful body shot.

7. This bout was great. These young fellas, Warrior's John Rock & Chase Michaud from Boones in Niagara Falls, just made the night with their skills & determination. I was pleasantly surprised with the technical skills from both these guys. They only weight 110 lbs. but don't mess with them - either of them - they will fight back.

8. Old School in Hamilton was respectfully represented by Jade Walsh at 134 lbs. against Marc Pagcaliwangan at 139 lbs. This was a close bout & both these guys have boxing skills. These fellas are interesting to watch. Their strategy & skill is improving each time they enter the ring.

9. Returning to the ring after a brief lay-off, Kyle Kearney of Primetime in Oakville mixed it up with Steve Wyville of River City in Sarnia. Both nice guys. Both determined boxers. I think you have to hit them with a Mac truck to stop them.

10. Marko Vidic from Hamilton at 155 boxed David Vasquez from Boone's in Niagara Falls. They appeared very even until Vasquez threw a solid overhand right that caught Vidic square on the nose & that ended the bout.

11. In an exhibition bout that was stopped in the first round, Tyler Walker from Hamilton & Roman Szlek from Destiny were too
aggressive & made a match out of the exhibition, which was quickly stopped by the referee & both boxers sent from the ring.

12. In the main event Hayden Jones from Primetime, Oakville tipping the scales at 220 boxed Phil Vandinbukel of Boone's in Niagara Falls at 226 lbs. When big guys go in the ring, usually somebody stays there or exits through the ropes. These guys boxed & didn't quit when the echo of the referee said 'Break' so each lost a point. That had no bearing on the ending. This bout was close & the judges scored a split decision.

And so, ended the exciting night. I have never seen so many stoppages & heard so much hollering in a long time. Even though I have limited hearing, I heard a lot of noise that night.

Better not miss the next one. On the 25th, Winston (Junior) Dann; Denton Daley and Juliusz Caesar Bunda hit the Hershey Centre with their pro bout. Be there...or be square.
