Destiny - Kitchener's Dec. 5th, 2008 closing boxing event for the year

Syd Vanderpool surprised his crowd at the CAW Hall in Kitchener, as he opened with being the announcer. He did a great job. He even pronounced most of the names correctly & we know that some names are not easy to pronounce. A 10 count sounding of the bell paid tribute to Mike 'Primetime' Post who passed away Nov. 28th, 2008 - his heart simply stopped after his early morning run. A great loss for his family, his fiance' Michelle, his friends, society & OBA.

We opened the evening with Emile Reed from the Boxing Loft boxing Ricky Pacheco from Bland's in Fort Erie. Emile took center & Ricky moved on the outside. The exchanges were quick.

Destiny's Natasha Spence, who won the 2008 Best Female Boxer from Destiny Boxing Club, battled Ring London's Kayla Boyd. Kayla is not to be taken lightly. She may not dance & scoot about but she not only can take a good punch but she can deliver one as well. Natasha was dressed in her black & red outfit. Real spiffy. She moves well - advances in & out - straight punches. Really exciting bout. Expect to see Natasha turning pro this coming year. Kayla would also have a good pro career.

Ring London's Cody Davidson at 145 fought the quick sound hitting Santo Chiappetta from McEwan's Pro Street Gym - Steeles Ave., North Toronto. Cody weather the hard blows from Santo & delivered some hard whacks of his own. This bout got everyone on the edge of their chairs.

Kaku Morimoto 135 lbs from The Boxing Loft in Toronto, hard hitting & used his right soundly as he battled Jeff Compisano from Boone's in Niagara Falls. Jeff is a great nephew of former Premier boxer John Compisano from Niagara Falls. Jeff's trainer, Isaac Mitchell was a Canadian Amateur Champion. Kaku knew little English which didn't matter when in the ring but OBA is versatile & coach & former boxer, Ben Burleigh was on hand to help interpret. This was a very exciting bout for the first timers. Usually first timers don't show such ability & make a few mistakes but these guys left no room for anyone to make a mistake. Great bout guys. I expect a lot from you in the future.

Sean Vesely from Counter Punch in Toronto boxed Bobby Bland's boxer from Fort Erie, Brian Terreberry. We certainly had a lot of good power in the ring to-night. These guys are no slouches either. This bout could have gone either way. It was close. Both tough guys.

Ian Pike from Destiny, had his sights on boxing Peter Bianca from McEwan's but settled for Garett Rollins from Boone's in Niagara Falls. Our announcer, Syd Vanderpool, jumped from the microphone to the corners to work with his boxers. He was a busy man but he had to be to keep up with the competitors. This bout was fairly even throughout & it came down to the last round.

Always a pleasure to watch...Gregorio Jiminez from the Boxing Loft in Toronto against Tola (John) Falana from Counter Punch in Toronto. This was a repeat of the entire night. No one came to rest in the ring. Gregorio had more technical moves but Tola, tall & with good straight punches used his reach well.

Then Winston Dann aka Junior Dann - I don't know why the name Junior but so be it - maybe because he has such a youthful look & always smiling - except when he is in the ring. Boxing Don Wonch from Hamilton was a 'different' kind of fight. Don seems to smile when he is in the ring. I think he should be called Smiler Don. Whoops...back to the action & this was action. Winston has great technical skills & Don is still new to the boxing arena but has some years in combat training so this bout was very interesting & both guys seemed to really enjoy themselves. I know that sounds unusual but you had to be there.

The main event was a 4 rounder with mixed feelings as to who won the bout. It featured Kitchener's own Ian Vanderpool in the heavy division (brother of Syd & Fitz & the others) against TNT's Paul Rasmussen from Guelph. Paul started a little slow with Ian, although the older, quickening the pace from the start of the bell. The second round was much of the same & the third round Paul rallied. The fourth round Paul seemed to have it with Ian a little tired but weathering the round like the Champion he is.

Juliusz Caesar Bunda was presented with the Best Boxer from the Destiny Boxing Club for the year 2008. He is a great boxer. Good technical skills & good power. Look for him in the Pro circuit in 2009.

Lucas Rowe was presented with the 2008, Destiny Boxing Club, Most Improved Boxer.
