SCORING SYSTEM FOR AMATEUR BOXING

The OBA has changed the scoring system to a 10 point system. There will not be a point given for any knock downs, which is different that the professional boxers scoring. The punch is proper & considered a 'scoring' punch, will count as 1 part of 3 to equal a point.

All boxers must wait until the referee is in the neutral corner, before the boxer/s enter the ring. If they enter prior to the referee, they will be asked to leave the ring until the referee is in the neutral corner.

Boxers with asthma, may use their inhaler at the foot of the steps before mounting but once, at the top & engaged in the bout, if the inhaler or any meds are used, the boxer must retire from the bout.

What happens regarding a boxer being downed by a low blow?

The offending boxer who is accused of the low blow, will immediately go to the neutral corner farthermost away from the downed boxer.

The referee will commence counting to 10. If the referee counts to 10 & the boxer is unable to continue, the referee, if he saw the low blow & felt that it was either deliberate, or a previously cautioned problem, (i.e. warned offender to keep his blows higher) the referee will then disqualify the accused & award the win to the downed boxer. The disqualified boxer will leave the ring with his corner men & not accept any award. The offending boxer will remain in the neutral corner until the referee advised him to return to his own corner & the offender MAY NOT converse with anyone while there.

If the referee is unsure about the position of the low blow, & this is without any prior warning or caution regarding any low punching, the referee will go to each judge & ask if they saw a low blow & if they believe the low blow to be deliberate. If the majority of judges saw the low blow, then the referee must make a decision regarding 4 choices.

Disqualify offender - RSCi to the downed boxer & winner to the offender - r No contest therefore no winner - allow 5 minute recuperation time & then decide on one of 3 options.

If the downed boxer stepped into the low blow causing an unintentional injury (low blow) to himself, then there will be no disqualification & the downed boxer will lose the bout due to injury. RSCi

If the referee deems that the downed boxer was hit with an accidental low blow, then the referee will allow up to 5 (five) minutes for the boxer to recuperate. If the boxer can not recuperate, the bout will be ruled 'no contest' & no winner will be named. The referee will send the boxer to the doctor immediately.

If the referee believes the boxer can not physically continue the referee should call in the attending physician for his assessment. If the downed boxer is deemed unable to continue - if deliberate low blow or pre warned low blow, disqualify the offender - if accidental then 'no contest' or RSCHi depending on circumstances.

If the referee feels the bout could continue & feels that the downed boxer is not wanting to continue, the referee may deem the bout a loss for the downed boxer due to injury. RSCi (Referee stop contest - injury) or simply RSC (Referee stop contest).

If the foul caused the injury but the bout continues each judge will deduct one point from the offending boxer. The referee should instruct the judges to take one point off but even if the referee continues the bout without that direction, the judges will take off one point.

Standing 8 counts & their significance

An 8 count does not cause the boxer to lose a point. The 8 count does not have any significance to the bout. It permits the referee an assessment time & provides the boxer time to be assessed. The blow that forced the 8 count may have not been a legal blow & therefore, no point would occur but if the blow was a legal landing blow then the offending boxer would receive one point which is only 1/3rd of a point.

At no time, if the referee passes the count of 8, can the boxer continue in the fight.

On Break

When the referee calls 'break' each boxer will step back to leave a minimum of 5 feet between both boxers. They may commence their bout after stepping back but if a boxer does not step back to assist in creating the gap of at least 5 feet, then any blow struck would be a foul & will be treated as such.

Boxers in need of assistance

Boxers whose family is unable to pay for his costs or equipment should go to your City Hall & inquire about the 'Jumpstart' program or other bursaries set up by private funding to assist athletes in memory of various persons.

Magnesium = a healthier body that will last longer

What is calcium to your body? Without sufficient calcium, your bones develop osteoporosis & that means, a fall could break your bones & in severe cases, a hug would break your bones. Found mostly in dairy products.

What is magnesium to your body? Well it is a mineral that few people actually think about. Magnesium is required for more than 300 biochemical reactions in your body. A magnesium deficiency can result in hypertension, muscle cramps, restless leg syndrome, diabetes, migraine attacks, emotional trouble, fatigue & irregular heart rate. June 24th 2011, at the Hershey Centre Hank Boone fell over & his heart stopped. The paramedics were able to jump start his heart & saved his life. The doctors said that only about 3% of people whose heart stop & are jumped back, live greater than 24 hours after the episode. Hank's heart stopped because he had very little magnesium. Magnesium is nature's heart relaxant. Patients who suffered from angina often had low blood levels of magnesium.

The spasms of coronary arteries & pain could be eased when the magnesium levels are good.

Magnesium adds oil to the circulation, helping to prevent platelets - small particles in the blood - from clotting & sudden death. Another role for magnesium is to keep the complex electrical system in your body regulated. If it is not regulation then auricular fibrillation will occur & this can cause death. 50% of the people that died from heart attacks have normal blood cholesterol but have low blood magnesium.

A study of 85,000 nurses showed that those that took 220 milligrams (mg) of magnesium daily were 33% more likely to develop diabetes then those consuming 340 mg daily.

So how do you get magnesium through your diet? With the skin on, one baked potato is 55 mg of magnesium. Half ounce of almond = 43 mg. One serving of shredded wheat = 40 mg. One cup of low fat yogurt = 43 mg. Half a cup of brown rice = 32 mg. One banana = 32 mg. A 3 ounce grilled salmon = 23 mg. One slice of whole wheat bread = 24 mg. There is magnesium in most fruits & vegetables.

It is important to take magnesium supplements daily. There are a few other vitamins or minerals that are important such as calcium, essential amino acids, vitamin E & several B vitamins. Let's not make the undertaker rich .... let him wait.

Drugs...What is the truth to the effect of drugs on the body?

60% of drug users are in the age group of 15 to 24. The most common abused drug is alcohol. After alcohol, the most harmful are heroin, cocaine, barbiturates & street methadone. Marijuana is a more common illegal drug which is not as harmful as those listed.

People indulging usually start with marijuana & then advance to pill & then mixing all different drugs. Side effects include shakes, hearing voices & being paranoid.

All drugs are poisons. A small amount acts as a stimulant (speeds you up) & larger doses act as a sedative (slows you down) & continuous use of large amounts do kill.

Drugs affect your mind by distorting your perception, causing irrational & inappropriate & destructive behavior. Drugs block off sensations that are normally desireable. Drugs blur your memory. Drugs take away your desire to succeed because they make you feel that your are slow or stupid & life gets harder while taking drugs. Drugs do not make anyone more creative. It is just the opposite.

Constant use tends to build up a tolerance & then more is needed to attempt to reach the goal but using more kills you. With marijuana, you suffer loss of coordination, vision distorting, no sense of time & hearing loss, also sleepiness, reddening of the eyes, increased appetite & relaxed muscles, heart beat increase (by 5 times causing a greater risk of heart attack during the first hour of use), reduced performace & impaired memory plus the inability to solve problems. Long term effect-psychotic symptoms, damage to the lungs, heart & worsening symptoms of bronchitis, coughing & wheezing plus reduces the body's immune system causing inability to fight any illness.

If a boxer fails to make the correct weight but is within a boundary that could have the entire category moved up or down by very limited pounds, this will be put before the coaches at the draw.

If you disagree & prefer your boxer, not to compete in a convenient weight division, you must state this at the Draw.

The OBA will make every effort to insure that all boxers get at least one bout.

                                  REGISTRATION

Remember, the boxer’s category is determined on the official weigh-in date.  You may assume a weight category that you believe the boxer will meet, but the actual weight will be recorded when the boxer hits the official scale on Friday.  There is a temporary scale for any boxers to check weight before weighing in on the official scale.

You can fax the form to 905 356 4089, email to office@ontarioboxing.net.

There is a spare scale to check the boxer’s weight before the boxer gets on the official weigh-in scale.

The numbered pre-bout medical identifies when the boxer will get the medical.

The boxer will complete the ‘Participant’ portion of the Pre-Bout Medical & make certain that they have printed their name neatly.

ONLY the boxer’s coach WILL complete the ‘Coach’ portion of the Pre-Bout Medical & sign that they are verifying the condition of the boxer.

The next step is to proceed to the weigh-in with the competition book & the completed pre-bout medical & check to see who you follow for your medical.

Once, the boxer steps on the official weigh-in scale, that is the weight category that the boxer must maintain through-out the tournament.

The weight will be recorded in the boxer’s competition book & also in the Officials Category Book as well as the weigh-in sheet handled by the scale monitor official.

Boxers & coaches are advised NOT to leave the site until after the Draw & program is completed.

.
The competition book & pre-bout medical will be left with the doctor, in a box clearly marked for the boxers.

An official from the registration desk will retrieve the books & the pre bout medicals.

   PROCEDURE  AT   REGISTRATION   DESK
No UNAUTHORIZED PERSONNEL – E.G. PARENTS, FRIENDS, ETC.
Registration Desk duty -- Before separating the books from the pre-bout medicals, each  Pre-Bout medical will be checked for the completion including the names being legible.  If unable to read the name, the boxer will not be able to compete until we can identify the boxer to the Pre Bout Medical.

All Pre Bout Medicals will be matched against the boxers name to make certain that every boxer has their medical.

After gathering the competition books, the books will be placed in alpha order in boxes & kept by the Vice President or their assistant.

Once the medicals for both males & females are completed, the Vice President, & appointed Chief Official, will sit in an area where other coaches will not gather around them.  The coaches will remain nearby but must be quiet & allow them sorting time.  As they go through the categories & place the boxers that match on a program sheet, they may ask the coaches questions regarding their boxer & the proposed bouts.

Following the placement of the boxers in their own category & writing them on a program sheet, the draw will be ready. It is at that time, that the Director of Officials, will ask all coaches to join them.

All coaches may check the weights of any boxer or the date of birth before the program is done.
As the names in the draw are called out, their DOB, category will also be announced.

During the Draw, there may be boxers that do not fit into a category for various reasons- so at that time, the Chief Official may offer to put the boxer in a different category to allow the boxer a bout.  The coaches must voice their approval or rejection at that time & in public. Any question of birth date, must be raised then.

A box containing numbered ping pong balls or a deck of cards will be available for the draw.
It is the responsibility of the coaches to mention if their boxer has not been named for a bout. The coaches must speak up at that time.

It is the responsibility of the boxer & coach to remain on site, in order to find out when the boxer will box or for contact regarding any changes in the category.

RULE: ..Boxers are NOT to eat within 3 ½ hours of program time.

   THE PROGRAMS

At this point, the matches will be given to the appointed program manager, who will make up the program.  This is not an easy task & takes time alone to set up the Program.

Categories that require 3 days for completion will be scheduled to fight on the first day. So if there are 5 or more boxers in one division, then you are sure that the first bout will be on Friday followed by another bout on Saturday & then the final on Sunday.  No boxer can box twice in one day. If necessary, a division in the weight category may be made or a final box-off at a club show will decide the Gold winner.

A program (boxing schedule) will be placed on the door of the boxing room room as soon as the program is completed.  Do not remove the program from the door.

All boxers must be on site & checked in with the Glover 30 minutes before their scheduled bout.

Bouts 1, 2 & 3 must be ready at the starting time of the event.  Three bouts before each boxer’s scheduled bout, the boxer will report to the Glover in his/her boxing outfit & have the dress checked & gloves for bout put on.

Every day that a boxer is scheduled to box, the box must weigh-in & have a pre-bout medical.  No exceptions.

Boxers not scheduled to box on Saturday, will not weigh-in until Sunday.

The decisions in some areas are made by the Vice President who confirs with the Chief Official & coaches.

                                      POINTS

Every boxer will receive one point each time they box regardless of the outcome.
If they do not box for whatever reason, there will be no point.

The GOLD is 5 points
The SILVER is 3 points.
The BRONZE is 1 point. Bronze medal is given the boxer who in the last semi lost to the Gold & not the Silver medallist.
The boxer, who loses in the finals to the Gold, is the Silver Winner.
The absolute winner is the Gold Winner.

Points are calculated & which ever club gets the most points, will win the Team Trophy which they bring home with them.

There will be a male & female award may change depending on the  separation of the Novice Category & contestants.
Best Novice Boxer   1-male  1-female
Best Open Class Boxer  1-male  1-female
Best Novice Bout   1-male  1-female
Best Open Bout   1-male  1-female

The final selection for the awards will be made by:  Brodie Boone, the host with the consideration of the .judge’s opinion.

The rating system will be handled by Brandon Boone, the Treasurer & former President of the OBA.  For those that don’t know Brandon, he is a partner in the law firm of Daniel & Partners in St. Catharines & is a former boxer, nephew of Sherry & Hank Boone,.  He specializes in real estate & corporate law & was called to the bar about 20 years ago. He is married & the father of 2 sons & 1 daughter.

No competition books are returned when the tournament ends. They are needed to update & print the certificates from but will be available at the next event.

Everyone should take a few minutes to copy this. It may save your life or the life of someone you love.

1. Tips from Tae Kwon Do; The elbow is the strongest point on your body. If you are close enough to use it, do so.

2. If a robber asks for your wallet and/or purse, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM. Toss it away from yourself. Chances are that he is more interested in your wallet or purse than in you & he will go after it. RUN in the opposite direction than the thief.

3. If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car, kick out the back tail lights & stick your arm out the hole & wave like crazy. The driver won't see you, but everybody else will. This has saved lives.

4. Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, eating, working, etc & just sit - doing their check book or making a list etc. - DO NOT DO THIS. The predator will be watching & this gives him a perfect opportunity for him to get in on passenger side, put a gun to your head, & tell you where to you. AS SOON AS YOU GET INTO YOUR CAR..LOCK THE DOORS & LEAVE. If someone is in the car with a gun to your head...DO NOT DRIVE OFF, INSTEAD GUN THE ENGINE & hit whatever you can. Your air bag will save you. If the person is in the back seat they will get the worst of it as soon as the car crashes. This is far better than to find your body in a remote location.

5. A few notes about getting into your car in a parking area. A) Be aware of your surroundings & look in your car before you enter the car. B) If you are parked next to a van...enter your car from the passenger door. Most serial killers attack their victims by pulling them into their vans while the woman is attempting to get into their vehicles. C) Look at the car parked on the driver's side of your vehicle & the passenger side...If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the mall, or work, & get a guard/policeman to walk you back out. It is always better to be safe than sorry. (And better paranoid than dead)

6. Always take the elevator instead of the stairs. Stairwells are horrible places to be alone & the perfect crime spot & more so at night but that doesn't make them much safer during the day.

7. If the predator has a gun & you are not under his control, RUN. The predator will only hit you 4 in 100 times & even then, it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ. Run, preferably in a zigzag pattern.

8. As women, we are always trying to be sympathetic: STOP It may get you raped or killed. Remember Ted Bundy, the serial killer was a good-looking well educated man who ALWAYS played on the sympathies of unsuspecting women. He walked with a cane, or a limp & asked for 'help' into his vehicle which is when he abducted his next victim. There is also a rouse used by some to pretend to ask for help finding their lost animal or other articles.

9. Another Safety Point. If you hear a baby or animal crying, do not approach. Call the police. This was a tape recorder that was used to entice the woman or child to the door where they then were gone forever. (mentioned on America's Most Wanted when they profiled a killer from Louisiana)

10. Water Scam: If you wake up in the middle of the night & hear running water...do not go outside. Some people have turned on outside water taps so that you will go & then attacked.

OBA Insurance Notes

The insurance coverage is a maximum of $4,000,000.00 which is included in your club fee & covers the OBA registered members & normal insurance coverage applies with limitations. Note that insurance on your equipment & premises, re fire, theft, are not covered under the liability insurance & that is your responsibility. If you need to increase your insurance, you may request an increase from the OBA office, who will provide you with the contact & you will be able to ask the insurer for additional coverage. It is usually about $300 per year for an additional $1m or about $100 per event for those that need more on an event.

Also note that our insurance company is available to any clubs that want to have their own equipment insurance & our insurance company may unite any requests to offer a more effective & less expensive rate if all interested booked under the OBA.

This could also apply to auto or life insurance. Those wanting more, please advise in writing to the office, so I can put to-gether a program for our insurance company to review.

HAND WRAPS

It was felt that putting a piece of wrap or gauze between every finger is neither a detriment or an advantage. Allowing hand wraps that are suppose to be only 96 to 100 inches in length is an item that is never monitored. Seems silly that the hand of 10 year old would use the same amount of wrap that a hand of a developed 200+ lb man would use.

So...coaches, be advised that you may put one piece ( 1/4" wide by 1 1/2" long) only through as many fingers as you so wish.

You can not use tape ( 1/4" wide by 1 1/2" long) except one piece on the back of the hand to secure the wrap only.

No build up on the knuckle area as you would wrap pro boxers hands.

Glover

The glovers will have to be trained to know that gloves will be put on only at the glove area & will be put on, in front of the glover.

No glover will be under 18 years of age.

The glover may have a helper/s and this can be a minor who will retrieve the gloves from ring side ending the bout.

The minor is not responsible to clean the gloves & can not issue gloves to the boxers/coaches.

These changes will be made to our rule book.

JEWELRY

Any jewelry wearing by the boxer, during a bout, is an offense & the boxer can face a 30 day suspension.

RULE CHANGES

The changes in the Canadian Rules regarding 3 minutes rounds and 5 rounds per bout. The OBA will allow 5 round bouts for boxers that are in preparation to go pro. There can be a gradual increase from 2 minutes to 3 & then from 3 rounds to 4 then 5. That decision will be made by the Technical Committee on request from any club for a specific event.

The boxers coaches must submit a request no later than 14 days in advance of the proposed bout detailing the request for the time & extended rounds. .

It is suggested that the amateur boxer going pro will first box 3 - 3 minute rounds & then progress to 4 rounds of 3 minutes & then to 5 rounds of 3 minutes in preparation of their pro career.

The safety of the athlete will be paramount & the standing 8 counts will continue. The stoppage after the 3rd 8 count & prior to a 4th 8 count will be enforced.

The size of the gloves may be altered & this will be an issue for the executive.

Hand wrapping for pros is much different than for amateurs & this area will also be discussed. .

While you are receiving the CPPD benefits, your dependent children under 18 (or your children between the ages of 18 & 25 that are attending full time school) are eligible for about $218.50 per month for 2012. These benefits are not automatic-when a new child enters your care & custody through birth, adoption, marriage or a common-law relationship, you or your child must apply.

If your earnings stop or decrease because you were raising your children that are under the age of seven, you can apply to have the CPP exclude that period of time from the calculation of your benefits. This ensure that the reduced earnings will not result in lower CPP benefits & that you get the highest earnings possible.

A HEARTFELT THANKS FROM HANK BOONE!

Well, while on the subject of 'Thanking', I, Hank Boone thank Boxing Ontario for recognizing my skills as a coach by awarding my former St. Catharines Boxing Club boxers. Sherry & I registered the St. Catharines Boxing Club in 1976 & maintain ownership even to-day.

Boxing Ontario has recognized my boxers, Steve & Jamie Pagendam who boxed proudly & competently under my tutelage & with no other primary trainer. Outstanding helpers in the gym were Ken Cox & Peter Dyker & Jim Krieger. Steve Pagendam went to the Olympics in 1984 & I accompanied him. Talk about ripping off a boxer! Jamie went in 1988 & although won his bout, he went down in history as the winner but with no medal holding.

Boxing Ontario recognizes Mr. Nice Guy, Hector Bordenave, extremely hard puncher who became a Pro boxer; John Farinacci who fought international after only 5 fights; Dom Vendetti whose career was short but he was a game boxer. There should be favorable mention for Joey Riley & his cousins Ray & Dwayne Riley & also the game Thompson brothers. They were great boxers! And so was Guy Normandeau who won the Canadians & let's not forget other great boxers like Robbie MacGregor & Sterling Reid who won a Tough Man contest a few years ago. While talking about power punchers let's not forget power house, Bill MacFall & Ronnie Brady & Randy Samardzich & Greg Peters & Jim Wright & then the excitement always grew when Jarring Jim Kreiger entered the ring.

There are so many others that I apologize to for not mentioning their name. Also recognized was Joe Corrigan who joined my St. Catharines Boxing Club about 1979. Keith Murphy joined the club in the early 1980s & although he had a few bouts, his accomplishments should be measured by the time he has dedicated to being a coach. He forfeited much as we all did. Thanks for the recognition!

Did you know that drinking 2 glasses of gatorade, can relieve a headache almost immediately? No unpleasant side affects.

Did you know that if you burn yourself, quickly get regular household flour & apply lots to the burn & leave it there for at least 5 minutes, the pain will go away within seconds. No scars & no discoloration. This doesn't apply to medical emergency burns but this is what the soldiers are using now in the far east. I tried it. It worked! Also if the burn is on the face, use egg whites. About one dozen egg whites applied directly to the burn to soothe & prevent scarring.

Do you know what helps clear a stuffy nose. Peppermint chewables.

Sore throat? Mix 1/4 cup of vinegar with 1/4 cup of honey & take 1 tablespoon, 6 times a day. Vinegar kills the bacteria. Soak a cotton ball in white vinegar & apply it to a bruise for 1 hour. Reduces the blueness & speeds up healing.

Alka-Seltzer helps treat urinary tract infections. Dissolve two tables in a glass of water & drink it at the onset of the problem.

Honey is a great remedy for blemishes. Dab honey on pimple & place a band aid over it. Works well overnight.

Toenail fungus is very hard to get rid of. Try Listerine mouth wash. Soak your ties in Listerine mouth wash & have healthy looking toenails. Works great on broken blisters too.

Formula 409 which is a cleaning liquid, doubles as a bug killer...especially with bees, wasps, hornets or yellow jackets. Just spray them & watch them drop.

Have a splinter...drop Elmer's Glue-All on it, let it dry, peel the dried glue off the skin & the splinter which stuck to the glue, comes out too.

Have a boil...cover it with Hunts Tomato paste..cover it & the boil will come to a treatable head.

Arthritis pain relief....mix 2 cups of Quaker Oats in 1 cup of water---microwave for 1 minute ---cool slightly--apply on those arthritic hands for relief.
